Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989) leads the Philharmonia Orchestra in this rare 1957 performance of Brahms' Haydn Variations, Op. 56. I created this video from the LP displayed above, issued on the Angel label in 1957, serial number 35299. With the exception of the April 13, 1957 Billboard magazine review of this recording (9:35) and those of the composer, all images used to create this video were taken from the LP label (12:01) and jacket (3:02).

  • This is so much better than almost any recording of this piece of music, I can hardly believe my ears. The *articulation" of the music is incredible and the various instruments sounds so very distinct and *individual.* The level of the playing of this orchestra is simply astonishing, as is the conducting. This may be the best I've ever heard. Thank you!

  • Stephen Jay Gould Got me here :)

  • In these Variations there's a magic synergy between tone colour and contrapunctus. And it's lighted up by a joyful and masterly harmony. This is probably the reason why i often cry when i listen to this work.

  • Love this!!!! Am playing it at the moment!

  • I have loved this since childhood, thanks for uploading!!
