On Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, a spirited antiwar rally was held in front of the White House. Sixty-one protesters were arrested in a nonviolent "Civil Resistance" action. Prior to the arrests, I talked with various pro-Peace activists, who shared their views on the current situation with respect to the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; the torture issue; closing Gitmo and Bagram prisons; the administration of President Barack Obama; and related Peace and Justice Movement matters.
For an overview of the Nonviolent Resistance Movement, go to: "A Conversation with Phillip Berrigan" by Father John Dear, S.J. at: http://www.fatherjohndear.org/pdfs/berrigan.pdf and to this article on Mahatma Gandhi, at:

  • Afraid of people who are so poor they can't leave their town let alone their country?

it's just like Vietnam bombing shoeless under fed people wanting to be free in the name of freedom. We can bomb the world to pieces but we can't can't bomb into peace. I don't think our President sorry to say is doing what I voted for him for. I voted to stop the bombing, and the wars on all fronts . It isn't happening . I thought he will do it: if not him who else?

  • Somehow we can pay 100's of billions year after year for these corrupt and unecessary wars, but we simply can't afford necessities like health care for all, increased education spending, jobs programs, etc.

    It is disgusting and criminal.

  • There is only one war, the 'drug war'. It is the 'root cause' of all the worlds problems. When the 'drug war' is over, all war, oppression, racism, misogyny, and oppression end. These people are working against ending any wars, and instead engaging in forms of activism that only prolong all wars. Medea Benjamin is the epitome of this type of activism. Fly around like Cynthia McKenna, and report from different locations. Work locally, think globally. Stop traveling people.

  • Well that was one post that had a lot of words and no substance. Raise your hand again when you have something to say.

  • Yes, this war is aimless, but what would we do else to pass our time ?

  • Obama there are at least 3 wars.

Afghanistan, Iraq, The war on drugs.

Your not going to win any of them. Stop this nonsense today. We are upset, we are losing, it is time to go home.

  • We simply can Not stand by and let others stand in the way of us getting REAL health care reform. Now is the time to take action. See the comment section of my profile for ways in which you can get more involved.
