Creative Communities Sample 1
Queens Community scene from Amor Latino presented by Thalia Spanish Theatre May 2009. Based on Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story, the rival gangs were flamenco/salsa dancers based in Queens, and tap dancers based in the Bronx. An additional rival element was that both gangs were baseball fans, those in Queens were Mets fans, those in the Bronx, Yankee fans. This scene introduces the Queens Community Julieta a young law student, her boyfriend Juan, her girlfriend Ana, a neighborhood hairdresser, Jenny la Chula, her mother Alba, a local politician, and Padre Tomas, whose character keeps trying to bring the two gangs together. A salsa music/flamenco dance arrangement interpolates elements of "Meet the Mets" over mambo/descarga feels. The coros show the Mets' fans longing to get back finally to another World Series: "Hemos llegado, asi venceremos," "un fuerte partido". The scene closes with Juan proposing to Julieta. She is not yet aware she will meet and fall for Romy, pizza delivery boy and leader of the Bronx Community.
