One of the stand-out songs that Elvis recorded for his 1968 NBC TV Special. on June 23rd, 1968 at Western Recorders in Hollywood. Elvis was so enamored of the Mac Davis / Billy Strange ballad that it became the only song to merit a full run-through alongside monumental finale " If I Can Dream "-----
though the version released on record is longer than the " live " version from the show.
When the song came out as a single in late February 1969 with " Charro! " on the B-side it only sold around 300,000 copies, peaking at #35 in the charts.
The song was a live favourite for Elvis the first summer that he returned to performing in 1969.
" Memories " has made up for its initial quiet showing with long-lasting popularity: the original recording has since appeared on This Is Elvis ( serving as the closing theme, as it did for the Elvis on Tour documentary ), Elvis` Gold Records Vol. 5, The Great performances, Elvis 2nd to None, Hitstory and The Essential Elvis Presley.
