Violent Attack on Rally in Jakarta

Indonesian police say they have detained 57 members of a hardline Islamic group for questioning. It follows an attack on an interfaith rally in Jakarta over the weekend.

STORY:
About a dozen people are injured after Islamic Defenders' Front supporters attacked members of the National Alliance for Freedom of Religion and Faith. They gathered to celebrate religious freedom and national unity.

A police spokesman says they have detained 57 suspects including the leader, Habib Riziq Shihab.

Habib Riziq Shihab told his group's members not to resist the police.

[Shihab, Leader of Islamic Defenders' Front]:
"If anyone of you are detained by police, don't panic and do not resist."

Islamic Defenders' Front supporters attacked the rally after some speakers at the rally
urged tolerance over the treatment of Ahmadiyya, who is an Islamic sect that some
Indonesians consider deviant

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono condemned the attack.

[Yudhoyono, Indonesian President]:
"I strongly condemn the violent action in Jakarta yesterday and the people who wounded several citizens."


Sunday's rally was supposed to celebrate the anniversary of Pancasila,an Indonesian philosophy marked by belief in one God. It's promoted by the country's founding president, Sukarno.
