Oct. 17, 2011: Annenberg Research Seminar: Christian Sandvig, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Please join students and faculty for a presentation by Christian Sandvig, associate professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with appointments in communication, at the Coordinated Science Laboratory, the Graduate School of Library & Information Science, and at the Institute of Communications Research. His topic: "Video Killed the Internet Star."
From professor Sandvig: "It's common knowledge that anyone can publish on the Internet, but finding an audience may be getting harder. New research about online video suggests that high capital requirements are now emerging on sites like YouTube. A new analysis of the patterns of attention to 440,000 YouTube videos over four years shows that the democratic Internet has new anti-democratic tendencies -- the days of laughing babies may be numbered. This has important implications for the freedom of speech, Internet architecture and public policy."
