This is a recording of the first performance on January 18, 2012 at the Rosenbach Museum & Library.
Since 1998, the Rosenbach Museum & Library has commissioned artists to bring our collections to life in unexpected ways.
As Musician-in-Residence, Dave Burrell's previous work with the Rosenbach includes: Bill of Sale for a Slave ('06), Syllables of the Poetry of Marianne Moore ('08), Western Extension of the United States ('09), and Portraits of Civil War Heroes ('10). The six new compositions written for the Civilians During Wartime concert give voice to the thoughts and feelings of the mothers, brothers, civilian spies, and runaway slaves all living in the war but rarely seeing the battle field. The tone of these compositions reflects the anxieties and fears of a population living in an unforeseeable future. Mr. Burrell dug deep into the Rosenbach's archive to find inspiration for these bold new compositions.
Today's performance is one of several Rosenbach programs commemorating Civil War 150. To view some of the documents in the collection visit: www.rosenbach.org/civilwar
