@dlamiss Under his management they finished 13th, 6th, 3rd and 10th and in the final season they won the FA Cup which was their first trophy for seven years and in the 20 years since they have only won two trophies.
He then moved 'upstairs' and Shreeves was brought back. Venables' first season was disappointing but each of the 3 full seasons he had as manager were on the whole successful. However his club record since has been poor.
I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one!

looks like we are going to have to differ on this but if you call doing a good job a guy who in his last three seasons running a football team saw the team finish 10th 15th and 8th and saw the start of the clubs decline to become the mid table non entity it took probably the arrival of Redknapp to shake that off then would hate to see your definition of a guy doing a bad job

@dlamiss I don't want it both ways, I'm defending his record at Spurs & also saying that a manager's trophy haul has to be viewed in the context of the clubs he managed.
It's debatable whether Forest, Derby & Southampton are smaller clubs than Palace or QPR. Just because a handful of managers had similar or arguably greater success at small clubs doesn't mean he wasn't a success. Venables got promotion with Palace & QPR.
Personally I think Venables is a prick but at Tottenham he did a good job
-
you are asking for it bothways with your argument. you say a side true ability is reflected by its end of season league position-ok spurs were the 3rd best team that season, but you then say you cant count approximately one third of Venables time as a manager because he managed small clubs
Graham Taylor
Brian Clough ( 2 clubs)
Lawrie Mcmenemy
Bobby Robson
Jim Smith
all managed smaller clubs than either palace or qpr and had greater success than el tel
sorry Venables was crap

@dlamiss So by that rationale, a team that is 4th in the table and wins their last 10 league games and end up as champions don't deserve the trophy???
A side's true ability is reflected by their position in the table at the end of the season.
I don't accept the 2 trophies argument. He managed the likes of Crystal Palace and QPR who are never going to challenge for silverware.
I'm no fan of El Tel but I'm prepared to give him credit where its due. As Tottenham manager I think he did a good job

so inheriting a spurs side that finished 3rd in 87 and then to lead then to mid table obscurity for the next few years was a good job- yes they finished third in 1990 but look at the end of that season they won something like 9 of the last 11games so from being mid table all season a good end of season run actually masked ther true ability of the side
spending a fortune on the likes of Stewart van den haewe fenwick mimms sedgeley walsh
venables 2 trophies in 28 years

@dlamiss As a Tottenham fan, I think he did a good job as manager. They finished 3rd again in 1990 and won the FA Cup the following year.
Unfortunately, Venables was deluded in thinking he could run a football club and I think Sugar was right in getting rid of him as chief executive.
Venables has since become a caricature of himself and comes across now as an obnoxious spiv.

Terry Vegetables has no shame even there crooning in front of his team mates who can't bare to look almost. You've got to admire his self-confidence.

good manager Jules
as the fans of Leeds Palace Pompey Australia Sours
and England where he won just 11 of his 23 matches as manager
when he arrived at Spurs they were a top three club. when he left they were a mid table non entity
