"Nils Sings Neil" Album

lyrics:

I am a child, I'll last a while.
You can't conceive
of the pleasure in my smile.
You hold my hand,
rough up my hair,
It's lots of fun
to have you there.

God gave to you,
now, you give to me,
I'd like to know
what you learned.
The sky is blue
and so is the sea.
What is the color,
when black is burned?
What is the color?

You are a man, you understand.
You pick me up
and you lay me down again.
You make the rules,
you say what's fair,
It's lots of fun
to have you there.

God gave to you,
now, you give to me,
I'd like to know
what you learned.
The sky is blue
and so is the sea.
What is the color,
when black is burned?
What is the color?

I am a child, I'll last a while.
You can't conceive
of the pleasure in my smile.

  • OMG its been like 7 freaken years since i last heard this cause i was in year 1 when my class sung this in front of the WHOLE school...

i cant believe i actually found this randomly on youtube

  • So beautiful.

  • As something of a wild child, this song really speaks to me. May we all view the world with the wonder of a child, no matter what our age. Oh to be lucky enough to have someone we can learn from, and share our wild child wonder with...and what's in that smile. It's lots of fun to have you there.

  • Nils & Neil 've got along for a long time (since "After the Goldrush", 1970 in fact...). Their voices are quite similar, consequently Nils' versions of Neil Young's songs are nice + what a great guitar player!! I particularly appreciate both Nils & Neil accoustic, do you remember Neil Young's Unplugged in 1993, feat. Nils Lofgren? That was a beautiful performance!! Hope it'll be available on DVD someday.

  • This is a great version of this song. I play this one (and apparently so does everyone else!) and there is nice nuances and licks in Nils version to borrow.

  • This sounds so good. Studio makes it sound so sterile but it's a child so it should be like that.

  • @Jeeperrandy Yeah, but....

On the Best of the Buffalo Springfield, when Neil sings the chorus the first time, it really sounds like "God gave..." whereas the second time, it's "I gave to you..."

Seeing as how those are the original lyrics, it has some basis in being so widespread, but you're right: Nils is not singing it that way and no longer does Neil.

And I could care less if anyone sings "God" or "I" -- I'm an atheist

  • this is one of the songs that was in my baby brother's slideshow of him and he's class.

  • Awesome cover . However , although you sing the lyrics correctly , you have them posted wrong in the video info section . Officially, it's not "God gave to you...", but rather " I gave to you..." which is the way you sing it. Those lyrics are posted wrong almost everywhere on the internet ( too many 'cut and paste' posters ).

Love Neil Young and it's great to hear very good cover versions. Thanks for sharing.

  • Wow. Thanks for posting!
