You know... Now that I think about it... I think that was done entirely on purpose, it gives the song another layer of magic kind of, one version you can hear the lyrics loud and the other is just so sleepy and dreamy. Both versions are equally great and it just depended on the sound system you had at the time this record came out... I'm surprised this song isn't famous.

When the STEREO track is played in MONO you cant hear the voice for some reason, as its placed on the left speaker.
