Bravo Gedda! What a brilliant singer and fantastic casting, truly inspired. Damn near pitch-perfect performance on all accounts, this CANDIDE!

Congratulations on your great Candide post. I heard there two of Olvis excerpts in this part. His is very different from Gedda's. In the recording, Olvis, a baritone, gives the perfect Broadway version, Gedda's live performance is that of a lyric operatic tenor. In contrast to Olvis, Gedda delivers a mischievous Governor, not a straight forward villain, much more interesting.
As for Bernstein "self-loving". It's his own funny piece he is conducting. Why not "love thyself".

Love that mutual moment at 1:58.
Don't you?

It's delightful to see a mature, unworried and loosed Bernstein together with Gedda. Gedda, most sensible when it comes to conductors, he was forthcoming in expressing his reservations regarding Von Karajan, and how he felt Karajan subjected singers to his will. Certainly, the total opposite here with Bernstein, who at this period in his career might have been to soft on singers. (Check the Carreras tamtrum in West Side Story). In short, Gedda must have been in heaven, he acted and sang as so.

I got a great laugh from this. rarely do you see a conductor (especially a high profile one like bernstein) hamming it up to that extent ;D
wow.... Gedda just KILLS those Bb's!

Gedda is so great the rhythm of this aria is very complex and he still manages great frassegio and humorous singing .Notice that he hit that huge high B-flat without preparing or scooping he doesn't sing any note before the B-flat and still hits it in the center.Great Nicolai
