in this aspect all cities are similar. By the way, almost all cities were built on trade routes for business and taking control over regions(banking, religion and political centers). New Amsterdam(York) is not unique, it was built on trade route. And all these "animals", they are people like me and you. Some of them just made choice, which is different from your vision of situation, some of them was attracted by city lights, but now they stuck in their needs.

Ofcourse, New York is popular, but it's so far from ideal. This is just image, like x-mas picture on postcard, kind of illusion, like happy guys in advertising on TV. But, if you will get gifts from postcard picture or will buy some goods, which was advertised by happy guy... they doesn't makes you happy. I hope, that you dream becomes true.
