Difficult way to be funny and spot on in front of a live audience back then...on the old Honeymooners ( another 'clean' classic ) Jackie Gleason had a way of telegraphing the other actors if a line was missed/forgotten or flubbed...he'd simply put both hands across his belly and that was the sign for ANYONE to ad-lib something ASAP...Invariably, it was almost always Art Carney who'd come up with something clever to keep the scene rolling...

it's not that there boring, they just didn't get it, im sure you didn't get it the first time you watched it either
