This is a stage you won't access through going the normal way across World 7. This stage can only be accessed if you find the secret exit in World 7-Tower. I could've easily accessed that and skip the battle against Ludwig, but it's no fun that way. The path takes you through a Toad House, then 7-6, then 7-Castle. The difference is that if you enter 7-Castle through 7-6, you start right near the door to go face Ludwig instead of going all the way. For this run, however, I will go through the 7-5 entrance, meaning I'll play the stage the full way.

World 7-6 features the Parabeetle, a returning enemy but used in a way different context than normal. A Parabeetle is a Buzzy Beetle with wings. In this game, they're way bigger than normal Buzzy Beetles, have red shells instead of blue, and travel in swarms with no intent of hurting Mario. They travel alongside Giant Parabeetles, who are even bigger versions. The idea here is to hop from Parabeetle to Parabeetle to get across, not unlike the Jumbo Rays in 5-5.

There are many differences, however. The Parabeetles are smaller than the Jumbo Rays, even the Giant Parabeetles, giving you less room for error. They travel in a straight line from right to left, which is good as the Jumbo Rays dive in and out the bottom of the screen. Parabeetles count as enemies and will hurt Mario if he makes contact with any side but their shells. And most significantly, Parabeetles will change their flight path for as long as Mario stays on them. Regular Parabeetles move up, seemingly overjoyed with having a rider, and Giant Parabeetles move down, apparently unable to withstand any more weight. If a Giant Parabeetle falls too close to the bottom of the screen, it'll be unable to get back up, and chances are Mario will be stuck.

If you're wondering where the 1-Ups are coming from, it's the sky. You get a 1-Up when you can land on 8 Parabeetles without touching the ground. The game indicates your progress by playing a chime in the C-Major scale starting with low C and ending with high C.

I couldn't get the sparkling stars on my save file. The Super Guide Block appeared when I was trying to get the Star Coins. I didn't take the block so the spot on the map is still blue, but I was a bit dismayed finding out that merely seeing the Super Guide Block denies you the sparkly stars.

  • how do you get to 7-midtower wheres the secret exit

  • The secret exit is in the part with the Bob-omb Cannons. There's a hole in the wall to the right.

  • what does a super guide block do exactly?

  • If you hit it, Luigi will come and take over. He'll finish the course for you. You're then asked if you want to do this on your own or if you'll skip the stage.

If you do, the space for the stage on the map remains a constant red and can't be returned back to the normal blue.

  • I did what you did too, I saw the Super Guide when trying to get star coins. (although I used it because I wanted to see what playing as Luigi was like)

What do you get the other stars for?

  • You get a star for defeating Bowser, one for getting all Star Coins in Worlds 1 through 8, one for finishing all World 9 stages, one for getting all Star Coins in World 9, and one for finding every hidden exit.

  • overhazard why doesn't mario have his hat on

  • Nope. It was just my persistence and the thought that HITTING the Super Guide Block destroys the sparklies, not just summoning it.
