He was charged with 22 offenses, and pleaded guilty to half of them. He didn't plead on the ones like "aiding the enemy" and "treason" but he did to releasing information, he just wanted transparency. I actually don't have to discourage this activity, whistle blowers are important. How could he find all that information if he was just a journalist? If you don't want our soldiers to be in danger then how about you get them out of the useless war we've been in for over 13 years.

I don't think the people determining Manning's fate will see it quite that way.

Manning didn't know everything he was releasing. There were a half a million cables. It was just a doucment dump. And he didn't do it on principle. He did it because he was pissed because of bullying and because his boyfriend jllted him. Watch 'Wikisecrets' on PBS Frontline! He knew he was breaking the law (in fact, now he admits to it) and now must pay the consequences. You have to discourage this type of activity - national security. Maybe he should have chosen journalism and not the military.
