Movies To Video Games Reviews
Review #13

WarGames for the ColecoVision, Commodore 64 and Atari 8-Bit Computer is fully reviewed and analyzed as compared to the actual movie itself.

Feel free to comment. More movies to video games reviews coming soon.. suggestions and feedback welcome and encouraged.

In the means of saving space the score tallies used to get to the final score are listed here instead of in the review itself. They are on a 1-10 scale with 10 being the best score possible:

Story Accuracy to the Movie 6.0
(Global Thermonuclear War is the same game David plays and the game we are supposed to be playing. It is clearly based on the movie with the Defcon indicators and the impending doom much like in the movie. But the story really is for us to piece together as the game was too simplistic to give us any story. But if you saw the movie and played the game you would understand its relation so its not too far off.)

Music Soundtrack Accuracy to the Movie's 1.0
(There is only one song in the entire game and its just a few notes repeated over and over again at the end of the game. And its not like anything from the movie. So I can't really give this a good mark. The song heard is catchy though and has a fun beat. But you won't know its from the movie or anything. Its very generic sounding.)

Game Difficulty 5.5
(The options and screens are few and the moves easy to pull off but the game is far from easy. On later difficulties the computer AI will be a nightmare bombarding you with constant attacks in many areas at once that you have to sort though. On the easier levels though this is pretty easy to juggle through. So it can be quite easy or quite hard making for a very middle of the road rating here.)

Overall Fun 6.0
(If only it wasn't so short and suddenly ending the game would be more fun. For a ColecoVision and C64 game you hope for more than a 6 minute or so adventure that just ends after the time runs out. Its still fun though especially to fans of the movie. But it will grow old fast and is probably more enjoyable for its nostalgia over how much fun it is compared to todays games.)

Final Score: 5.75

  • What a great idea to do a review on this game. I used to love this game back in the day- I had it for the Colecovision, and I remember it had many elements from the movie.

  • That movie was neat, this review is neat also =D

  • Info not complete In the late 90's A PC Win95 version of Wargames was released by EA. Developed by InterActive Studios. It was a pretty straightforward RTS, but did have the Wargames opening and unlike most RTS games of the day, battles were fought in the air on the ground and underground. Hacking was also involved.

  • Correct names are:

    David Lightman and McKittrick

  • Good review.

The ColecoVision version is fantastic, especially for an early '80's game.

    Very involving and challenging game.

  • smd

  • so ??? defcon does look way nicer but its newer 2! so u can shut ur trolley mouth u troll

  • His name was Lightman wasn't it?

I wish they made a better video game for it.

  • This was the hardest game I owned 4 the Coleco. I beat it in all 4 levels with a defcon 5 except 4 level 4 which was almost impossible. I beat that level with more than half the country filled with craters but @ least I beat it once!

  • I want to see the movie now lol looks good. Love how detailed your reviews are too.

  • Makes me wanna see Wargames, and play Defcon ^_^ Great review
