This is my attempt aka "murder" of the classic song Big City. Keep in mind I have never ever sat behind a steel guitar in my life until the day before this video. Hopefully I can someday look back and laugh at myself sounding like a peacock in a slaughter house playing a damn maverick! LOL thanks!

  • Quite amazing if it 'really' is your second day. I took me a long time to even hold the bar correctly. Better get yourself a pro steel though. Even a top pro would have a hard time with a Maverick...they are virtually useless.....! Try practicing your vibrato on single strings until it cries...! And for Chris'sake...learn how to tune it properly. When it is properly tuned it practically plays itself..!

  • @odysseus96 yeah I sold that POS, tuning was an issue on it. Have not bought a new one yet, but heavily shopping for a pro model that I can afford. Thanks for watching

  • not too shabby...my 2nd day, I ran my wife, kid, & 3 dogs off cuz it sounded so bad. so, I stopped playing it & worked on a 12 pack of busch...i have that mastered.

    check out my vids

  • LOL sounds like good advice. I have since sold that beast. even made a few bucks off it!

  • On the contrary, I think this is some fine playing. Just curious, mind if i ask how much you got that pedal steel for?

  • Thanks for the encouragement. I got this maverick on ebay for $425. its in great shape. I do wish I had went with a carter starter. I'm at the point now where I need the other knee levers.

  • @hgbpro Dude, whatever you do, do NOT get the Carter starter. I know Carter makes basically the best guitars, along with MSA and Sierra, but the Carter starter is almost garbage, especially if it's used. Just get a pro and work your way into fitting the guitar right.

  • Just loosen up, and change the position of your fingers.

  • p.s. upgrade NOW coz , the knee lever for the minor chord is on the other side when you get more levers. So you'll have to re -learn certain things. You might as well not get used to it on the student model! Also, start vibrating the bar, essential for good tone, get used to it.Play with reverb and a delay pedal.Keep it up!

  • I just sold my MSA student model from the 70's. So broke, sentimental attachment, oh well. Glad to have a GFI upgrade. You will kick butt on the thing , if you are determined. Listen to sneaky pete , John Huey, Buddy Emmons,(or whoever your favorites are) and try to recreate the sounds they get .It's a good learning tool. Volume pedal is essential for the"emotion " and overall sound of good steel. Keep it up , so will I. I too need to do more on the steel. It's challenging , to say the least.

  • Pedal steel? That's like skipping learning how to drive automatic and going straight to stick shift... Really good for only your 2nd day!

  • second day? sounds good to me i have been carrying around mine for 35 years, steels are a disease. Be careful.------ Tex Message (cowboy singing star) and steelplayer.

  • My first steel was similar to this one it was an old Emmons push pull that looks like this one!

  • i tried a carter starter one time sure was not the guitar my sd10 rains is or any other carter i played on at convention

  • I think you are very smart not buying a $5000.00 steel from anyone or any make. That way if for some reason you drop the idea, your not out a bunch of bucks. You would not believe how many are gathering dust in someones closet who gave up due to lack of motivation. It takes a lot of practice and positive attitude to master any instrument and play with a band. good job and good luck!!!

  • @Quadsinker Trust me, if you keep playing steel one they will run away and not come back.
