The bassist is James Hughart who played on all the early Waits albums. He is married to singer Yvette Stewart and has played on so many things that you probably wouldn't believe how many times you've actually heard him.
Tom Waits was fortunate enough to come into his own when enough of the movers and shakers saw him and said "YES". And we are all blessed to have all of his work preserved on you tube for ALL to enjoy.
"It always makes me sing.....it always makes me sing".
i cant say its his best because he's my favorite musician and i have a new favorite every week but i must say this did turn me on to beat poetry and the imagery is top flight
wonderful song

AWESOME bass line. Sampled in Digable Planets' "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" and De La Soul's "Oodles of O's".
