Byron Janis was Horowitz first student. I only had the opportunity of hearing him play once. He had by that time been struck with the crippling arthritis of the hands that eventually ended his career. His performance with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra of the Schumann Piano Concerto was a beautiful and poetic conception that seemed to belie his condition. There was not one single dropped note.
He is a great pianist, but his Brahms sounds more like Liszt (who was so boring to Brahms that he fell asleep
at his concert). Janis´s pianistic virtuosity covers the
musical quality, esp. its "Weanerisch" character.
The following paraphrase is of course superb!

Has anybody seen the television documentary that Byron Janis did on Chopin's life? His performances of the Chopin Ballade in G minor and the 6th Hungarian Rhapsody by Liszt are exposive and comparable.

Nostalgic comments can not be without reference to Dinu Lipatti! I am agree with Janis's Fans. He was greath. I discovered him whit a live recording of Liszt's Hungary Rhapsody n. 6 and afther this I ask all my firends about him. I listen to her piano recital in Genava at Place Neuve in the '80 and he was fantastic. Sombody in the hall compare her third sonata of Chopin wiht Lipatti's record! Janis was more imaginative and greath in sound. Unbelievable Technique.

In In the fifties Byron Janis,Leon Fleisher, and Gary Graffman were my favourite American pianists. I did not yet know of the awesome William Kapell. I've since come to admire Kapell on the same level as Dinu Lipatti, who also was brilliant and died all to young. This brings back memories of those glorious years to my mundane existence. Bravo!
