my old worm winch, video 3. it's a year or so later now - I'm goin' into detail here about what it is I'm planning to *modify* on this thing. maybe I'm trying to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse, or whatever it was they used to say back in the -real- old days...but, *hey* maybe not...

way I figure it, I need to do three or four things:

a. add a thrust bearing for the worm, hopefully, ball-bearing type, ground OR unground. unfortunately, the worm shaft OD is nine sixteenths, which *isn't* a real easy to find ball-thrust bearing ID size.

b.add a 'flip latch' and lower worm mount pivot, so the worm can be -rapidly- disengagaed (for rapid rope payout purposes)

c. make the drum, bull gear, AND shaft they're on into a single unit, so I'll be able to hand-crank the drum/remove the 'rope slop' rapidly, prior to re-engaging the (super-slow) worm again. (like it is now, only the spool and bull gear spin as a unit on their shaft; the shaft is 'fixed' to the frame)

d. step c above will entail either modifying the frame, so the drum assembly can be re-inserted into the frame, or, remaking the ENTIRE winch frame "from the GIT-go". it'll have to be one or the other...

but I might end up doing just step e:

find an old a two-speed spur-geared winch somewhere, one I like, that has SOLID (and no riveted) gears, and maybe a hand brake. and that's hopefully liftable by mr ol' guy here...so it'd need to be roughly in the football to basketball size range, overall, more or less, if ya know what I mean....sort of.

OK, think it over, take a couple aspirins, and get back with me :-)

hey, who freakin' *KNOWS* what I'm gonna do? not even me...

  • why dont you slap around and hold the worms head.

  • i didnt know bobcat golwithe colected winches!!!! ah aha ha huuuuu that thing is a piece!! i also sell a "thrust bearing kit" with worm for your wife with a machinced center pounder for your wife. and you can have the spool and shaft with head stock.

  • what i would do there is cut the hoop off the hand & attach a cordless drill to it!!!!!

  • Is this a joke? cause i laffed my a88 off. At the end, he still has the same old crappy rusty winch!! And what's with the Tourettes?

  • Well making the pinion tilt the way you said is a good idea ,instead of a top bolt that you,ll have to take off and on put a pin with a with a pull pin with a piece of wire so as not to lose it .

On the other end ,you would be ahead welding a crank on the side of it with small teeth that would mesh with the teeth on the spool so you wouldnt need to do so much with it ,on the pinion side your missing C clips ,forget about the bearing ,its not gonna spin that much.

    Top of my head ?!
