It is always a sad thing for me when an industry and its players are portrayed in a bad light. I always hope that what is disclosed is only an isolated incident or occurrence and that, eventually, the industry will correct or regulate itself for its own survival.
The lead role in Swan Lake, wherein a single ballerina has to play the roles of "Odette" and "Odille", is one of the most coveted roles in ballet. It has been danced by the likes of Anna Pavlova, Margot Fonteyn, Natalia Makarova, Darcey Busselle and filipina, "Maniya Barredo" at the ABT. It is perhaps one of the most challenging as the ballerina has to play two contrasting roles in the same ballet. Well, other dancers have to play more than one role... that is true, particularly, if they are lacking dancers; however, dancing two lead roles is a mile different. This is where characterization in theater comes to play. It sets the prima ballerina from the core de ballet. She has to be both a technical dancer and a magnificent actress. Some just have the x-factor. Not being on the lead should not be a cause for depression though, it is a full production and each element is important in its own.
