I created this battle system one day when I was really bored. I'm not sure if I will actually release the battle system into a game because other plans for another game have popped-up and school takes away a lot of time. Don't ask for a tutorial because there is a hell lot of coding that was put into this. If I do decide to create a game with this, please note that this will not be the final appearance (graphics and such).

This video demonstrates RM2k3 events making a dynamic active battle system. Some features include:
1. Guarding- You are able to quickly block and reduce the amount of damage you take depending on your timing.
2. Gradual Health/Mana Down- A copy of Mother/Earthbound's system. Instead of immediately dying, you can still stay alive as long as your health doesn't go to 0. You are also able to heal before you die.
3. Fully Animated Sprites- All sprites were customly made by me and are all animated. There are some reused graphics but this will not be shown if I make a final project.

Things you should know:
1. The heroes you see in the video aren't playable besides Alistar who is the main character in my story. Elliot is my old character while Andoru is the protagonist in another RM game called, Starless Umbra ( http://www.starlessumbra.com ).
2. The slime sprites have been slightly remade but if they are still a problem, please notify me.
3. The first slime attacks constantly because I set it that way to kill me faster.
4. Ignore the bad dialogue (rawr, noob). I play way too many MMORPGs XD
5. There's a glitch in the second status box. Ignore that, it's been fixed.

  • I'd like to know how you got those enemies to animate in battle like that. O_o I've been trying to figure that one out for years.

  • I used pictures. This is a custom battle system, not RM2k3's default.

  • drgnlord50, are you the creator of Starless Umbra? Beacsue I recognise the character, Andoru.

I ask because I freakin' LOVE that game!!!! XD

  • ah I wish. dragonheartman created it. I'm actually a fan as well and recreated Andoru for this battle system. =P

  • I love RPG Maker 03. I tried 2000, XP and VX (95 didn't work on my PC), but I prefer 03, mostly due to the screen res and more features than 00.

I am making an action RPG like Ys Book I & II on the Turbografx-16 except that it occurs in the future and instead of gaining exp to level up you only gain money and must purchase upgrades to increase your atk, def and speed. The hardest part ever was to display amount of gold on the screen real-time. You have to use images to display text anywhere

  • yeah, i also prefer 2003 out of all the other RMs. i just dont have the time to draw high resolution pixel art.

your game sounds cool. im not sure about the upgrades though. i dont think it would work too fluidly. go for it and see what happens.

im currently working on an on-screen custom menu system for this game. the programming for displaying variables isn't too complicated. you just have to work with RM for a while to learn it XD

  • as for my ATK/DEF/SPD upgrade system, so far it seems to work well, I just need to make sure it won't take ridiculous amount of time to max them out. My game is rather simple actually, since it's only my 2nd RM game ever but it will probably be a good base for a sequel or a new similar game

I'll post vids soon, but I will not post my first RM game vids because Youtube kept deleting them on my old account (as it's based on an old cartoon)

  • Yeah I still haven't figured out. Because displaying one image per digits really slows down the game a lot. In 320x240 or full screen I get my 60 frames a second fine, but if I switch o 640x480 I get some lag. There's about 90 lines of code just for displaying the amount of gold. And I never found any tutorial anywhere on how to display variable content without using hacks that are bloated with other features we don't want and can't disable

  • nice work

  • very nice :D
