Four Montenegrin journalists traveled to Washington, D.C. and Maine from September 13-24 as part of a Defense Reporting Journalism Workshop focusing on defense and security reporting. Journalists learned about the role of military spokespersons, the challenges and benefits of embedded reporting, the importance of the Maine-Montenegro military partnership, and the structure of the U.S. military. This program targeted key journalists from state broadcaster RTCG, private TV stations Vijesti and IN, and daily newspaper Vijesti.
While in Washington, the journalists learned about defense and security institutions at the national level in briefings at the Pentagon and the Department of State, the U.S. Naval Academy, the Defense Information School at Fort Meade, and the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University. In addition, they visited several media outlets in the D.C. area, including CBS and WUSA-TV.
The journalists also spent a week in Maine to better understand the operations of the Maine National Guard and to become more familiar with the State Partnership Program launched in 2007. They also visited the state's leading state newspaper, The Portland Press Herald, and were guests on several live TV and radio spots, including the visit to Time Warner Cable TV from Maine.
