  • In 1956 another SS Mariposa was launched from Portland; along with her sister ship the SS Monterey they mainly did the South Pacific route, departing from Los Angeles. The SS Mariposa in this clip is from before 1956, that one sailed during WWII. Both SS Mariposa sailed under Matson Line. My father was assistant and then chief engineer on the SS Mariposa of 1956. He sailed on it from 1956 to 1972. (See next posting below.)

  • (Continued) He's now soon to be 95. He recently had me scan and enlarge the ship's postcard with the M on the stack with an inscription of his name, title and years of service on it. It's hanging at eye level on the wall by his bed and he loves looking at it when he wakes up in the morning or after naps. I had the pleasure to sail on it with the family when I was 7, and it was always a thrill to go on board when it came in port in Papeete, Tahiti for 3 days; yeap that's where he met my mom.

  • There is a January, 1944 passenger list for the SS Mariposa that includes the names of my father and his family on a sailing from Bombay, India to San Pedro, California. My grandparents had been missionaries in China along the Tibetan border until caught up in the war. I know they escaped from China through India. Records show the Mariposa was a military transport ship during WWII. Were US civilians routinely evacuated from war zones on military ships during the war?

  • Nice to see ships relating to my side of the United States' history. They really are original designs, and they still have the ocean liner feel.

  • I think I can help you. My Dad was on Maripose to AU WWII. Have tons of information for that time, he was an active vet, they even had a reunion in AU in 1977, what outfit was he in, anything you can remember would help me point you to some really great websites or people, there arent many left.

  • It was great to see the ship that my father travelled on during World War 2. I have a document that say he was aboard it on November 12th 1943 at 14:02 P.S.T, from Sydney to San Francisco.

I have only just found this document, so it is great help to me in trying to piece together my fathers movement during the period 1939 - 1946

  • In 1972, My father was transferred to New Zealand, He was in the Diplomatic Corp at the time. We went to NZ aboard the SS Mariposa and then 3 yrs later, we returned to the states aboard her sister ship, the SS Monterey (Which is now part of MSC Cruises). Thank you for bringing back such wonderful childhood memories!!

  • On the 27th day of November 1945 my Grandfather sailed to Italy on the Mariposa. He was with the 349th Infantry Regiment during WWII. I have a photo of the Mariposa taken by him on that day. The photo that I have of the ship is the exact side and angle of the ship as it is in this film. Amazing thing to find. Thank you very much.

  • Im pretty that the ship is docked in Havana, those piers still exist.

  • arrr you also make ship movies check out some of my movies !
