Clean Up After Chatham County Courthouse Fire In Pittsboro NC
The Chatham County Courthouse in Pittsboro, NC, built in 1881 and listed on the National Historic Registry, was being renovated. Scaffolding was in place around the building, on the roof and around the clock tower.
The building was actively occupied: first floor - DA offices and the Chatham History Museum; second floor - court and jury rooms; third floor - Superior Court judges' chambers.
The fire was alarmed after 4 p.m. Thursday March 27th. Multiple fire departments of the county responded.
The clock tower fell into the building after Midnight Friday March 26th and all the floors collapsed. Flames were still visible Friday afternoon.
