  • high school and college aren't you supposed to take the plays from third base extended only. I mean, you have to slightly adjust for the play because none of them are perfect and you need to get a great angle.. always third base extended or some variation of it?

  • @ForTheWeekRocks -- Hi, to answer your question, no. That's a misnomer floating around out there. It appears because everybody sees so many umpires in MLB take 3rd extended, they should to but that's not the case at all. To this day, Pro umpire school still teaches the basics as I do. Each play at the plate dictates what you do. There are no mandatory mechanics as you ask or as I like to say absolute "Xs and Os". To be a good umpire you have to learn to react and adjust to each play. ~Bugsy

  • Thank you. My high school and college association tells us to be third base extended. It is good to know that you should move depending on where the play brings you. That is something I never knew and was just told "3rd base extended no matter what". It is helpful to know what you are teaching in this video and all others that you have. Thank you for putting these up to help everyone at any level!
