This clip shows the Hot Five Jazzmakers performing at the "Earlyjass Fest" in Strongsville in September 1995.
"The Moose" is an old march composed in 1909 by P Hans Flath and it became popular among the traditional jazz fraternity when Bunk Johnson revived it in his 1942 recording. It is said it was named for one of the New Orleans marching Societies. The band here consists of Charlie Gall - trumpet; Janet Shaw - clarinet; Brian Towers - trombone/leader; Rainer Hunck - banjo; Colin Bray - string bass and Gary Scriven - drums.

Our thanks to Bob Byler for filming this concert for us.

  • Thanks to you "iwasagasman" for the positive comments...we were probably back in the same London clubs back in the 1960's - Brian T (tbn)

  • The band's title is a notalgic reference to the old Louis Armstrong Hot Five.

The Hot Five Jazzmakers often stage seven players and more often six these days.

  • Absolutely gorgeous!!! TQ for uploading x x

  • This is the music that I've loved for over 60 years. This is the wonderful nostalgic sound that I used to listen to at the " all nighter " sessions in the London clubs of the 1960s.. And as for that clarinet solo, Perfect, just perfect. Well done guys ( and gal ) and thanks.

  • What a great sound. Can't help noting though that there are six playeres in the "Hot Five"?

  • Janet Shaw's playing is like golden pearls strung on the string of the melody.A simply beautiful piece.Oh,Happy Canada!

  • I'm sorry Mooche must be MOOSE.

    Paul Zelders.
