A tough one, especially if you don't press Guard as soon as possible.

His Charge will deal up to 1000 damage unblocked. However, this attack will take up his whole turn and you have time to heal. And yes, unless you actually forgot that you have an Item Bag (like me XD), always use Items instead of Magic. The reason is that heal spells will take your Echo away.
