This happened at Relay for Life, and event held to raise money for cancer research, at Voorheesville High School in Voorheesville, New York, at about 7:30 p.m. My friends and I ended up staying in the concessions building next to the track when everyone else went inside. After the storm was over, we walked outside and we saw this cloud so I took some pictures and some videos of it.

This is a wall cloud, not a funnel cloud or a tornado. A wall cloud is a lowering of the cloud beneath the updraft of a thunderstorm. Most tornadoes form from the wall cloud, but not all wall clouds produce tornadoes. The information below is from wikipedia.

"A wall cloud, or pedestal cloud, is a cloud formation associated with thunderstorms. It is a marked lowering typically beneath the rain-free base (RFB) portion of a deep cumulus cloud (normally cumulonimbus but on occasion cumulus congestus), and indicates the area of primary and strongest updraft which condenses into cloud at altitudes lower than that of the ambient cloud base. Most strong tornadoes form within wall clouds."

  • @stormspinner1 Tornados happen regularly as far north as Edmonton Alberta Canada.

  • @lionsforlyons: the dust devil was actually a couple of days later, totally unrelated. i just thought it was cool :) and it was really calm when i was recording the video, no wind or anything

  • @stormspinner1 There was a tornado in Upstate New York back in 1998 which was caused by a Jericho that moved through. Also, Brooklyn had a Tornado back in 2007 I think it was. New york has tornados they just cause minor to mild damage. We mostly get microburst, severe storms, and updrafts.

  • I like how you can see the Wall Cloud right next to the Precip!!!

  • Nice wall cloud. That was a money shot there.

  • Nice friggen wall cloud! I just put up a video of a wall cloud just north of Albany on June 22, and saw yours posted. Now we just need some tornadoes!

  • New York?!?? Would expect this in the Plains, not New York - not a tornado, a tornado is a funnel cloud that makes contact with the ground. Still, an amazing capture - wow

    *StormSpinner* in Texas

(who's seen more of these clouds than she'd like to admit LOL)

  • great video, especially for NY!
