Generally when someone is talking about a story being well written they aren't talking about how correct the grammar is. They are talking about how well the story is presented and how well it grabs your attention and holds it. By that definition, encyclopedias are very poorly written.

Also, I don't think it's fair to compare academic writing in encyclopaedias to creative writing in books. The writing styles are just not the same.

I'm sorry but I just don't see how a book can tell an amazing story with poor writing and engage people as well as a book with excellent writing. Everything has to be there to make a great book. In the case of 50 Shades of Grey it seems like people just read it for entertainment and ignored the writing, and weren't actually looking for a good read.
