Imagine you want to build a new kind of real-time search engine that removes noise and finds authoritative and interesting items. How would you do that? Well, with the introduction today of DataSift you can get access to real-time data tracking features that are quite powerful. Here I interviewed Nick Halstead about DataSift to learn more about what it does and what its impact will be. You might not know who Nick is, but he founded TweetMeme, which keeps track of hot Tweets. Today Twitter announced a new Twitter button which has impacts on TweetMeme.

  • If this particular data mining tool proves to be useful and becomes popular, then Twitter may be compelled to buy (or invest in) the technology. It's not that easy to successfully mine data, especially with content as diverse as Twitter's.

  • Pretty volatile place to position yourselves on the value chain. How long will it take to Twitter itself to launch a service of their own that provides all your promised features?
