Woke up one morning feeling a bit maudlin and with the words "vacant lot" rolling about in my head ... and here's what it developed into. Hope you enjoy.

There's a vacant lot 'round the corner
wedged between two city blocks
and that's where you'll find Stanley
huddlin' with his gin

waiting for the sun to rise

traffic passes so quickly
pedestrians shuffle their feet
and no-one notices Stanley
huddlin' with his gin

where has he come from and where does he go?
so many stories, we'll never know.

at the nightclub they spill on the pavement,
a cabbie waits, sipping coffee
Stanley crouches in the shadows...
watching with his gin

and the winters are cold and lonely
the westerly wind, it whistles
through empty city streets
lonesome street light

and there's many more like Stanley
struggling to survive
sheltering on cold doorsteps
hunger in their eyes

@MrECLECTICIAN thanks for exploring this one Jeff - The words for this one came from nowhere -- the first verse came pouring out real quickly -then I stopped thinking "I'm not qualified to be writing comment on homeless people.... " and tried to write abut something else,,,, but nothing came. so resigned myself to writing whatever was coming... felt like channelling from somewhere else..:)
