Wow. If that's true it makes it even more amazing because it does not SOUND overdubbed; it's so immediate and "there" in a way that vocals in film musicals usually were not.

Incidentally I also happen to think that Garland's loss for this film to Grace Kelly for THE COUNTRY GIRL at the Oscars may just be the biggest Oscar robbery in history.

In the words of Fred Astaire, Judy Garland is 'the greatest entertainer who ever lived.'

This was pretty groundbreaking at the time. According to Harold Arlen's biographer this song was written to show off the singing skills of the character without a lot of extra stuff going on which for the time was quite odd for a musical number.

But then again, it's Judy F'n Garland.

Unfortunately, this is not formatted properly, and the figures are distorted. See this upload for the original widescreen dimensions--I'm not allowed to post the YouTube link but the title of the video is " HD 1080p "The Man That Got Away" Judy Garland - A Star Is Born (1954)" by ozabbavo77.

The perfect storm: One of the greatest performances of one of the greatest songs in the Great American Songbook, by the greatest of the Tim Pan Alley tunesmiths (Harold Arlen), with the greatest lyrics ever written by one of the best lyricists (Ira Gershwin), performed by the greatest star Hollywood ever produced. At the same time we bemoan the suffering of Judy, we must appreciate how that same suffering informed performances such as this one.

I agree 100% about Burton; I never much liked A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS and frankly Paul Scofield's stagy, mannered performance really didn't deserve a nomination, much less a win. Burton and Taylor in VIRGINIA WOOLF were devastating and should both have won.

As for Newman in THE HUSTLER, I do sort of agree but I have a harder time taking the Award away from Maximilian Schell, whom I thought was wonderful in JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG, which also happens to be one of my all-time favorite films.

That's my whole point: in THE COUNTRY GIRL Grace Kelly played a frumpy housewife with dull clothes, nondescript hair, and glasses; they gave her the Award for playing "against type" despite the fact that the performance was unsuccessful in the extreme. In fact she made five other movies in 1954 and of those five at least two, REAR WINDOW and DIAL M FOR MURDER, would have been better choices for Oscars than THE COUNTRY GIRL. She was terrible and Garland was robbed.
