  • Actually - all the photo evidence points to the fact that in Death Valley all mules were used - yes all 20 were mules. This whole idea of 18 mules and two horses came from a book published in 1892 called "Illustrated Sketches of Death Valley." The author never saw the Death Valley teams but the teams that operated from Borate (near Barstow) to Dagget - only an 11 mile run. On that short run they used horses at times. But not on the 165 mile Death Valley run - horses would not be practical.

  • @goldcreekfilms

    Thanks Ted.

If either you or Bob Tanner (Father or Son,) state something about mules, I believe it.

    I stand corrected.

  • They actually used 2 large draft horses because of the strength needed to handle the lead wagon tongue. Mules are actually much smarter and more level headed than horses. I have heard Sierra pack station operators say that they wish they had a horse as smart as their dumbest mule. Bob Tanner used 20 mules to pull the wagons in several parades including the New Years Day Tournament of Roses Parade.

  • grillob802 your a dumb ass those are called out riders and by parade laws have to be used! Those are all mules pulling that wagon. Very well broke mules go do you history lessons. and try to look a little closer.

this is Muleskinning at its finest, Nice job skinner

  • Trivia: Twenty Mule Teams have 19 mules and 1 horse (the one with the rider close to the wagon). This is because mules are difficult to control. There are also Ten Mule Teams with 9 mules and 1 horse.

  • Hopefully these wagons and mules will be on the road touring soon!

  • We understand the Borax 20-Mule Team will be here in Bishop Ca for the 40th annual Bishop Mule Days May 18-24th. The world famous Budweiser Clydesdales, the Priefert Percherons and Texas Thunder will be joining them. It's going to be a great show.
