I recommend using at least 20cm for the joint.
Unsheath 25cm on each end, but don't cut. This is used for overlap later.

    Thank you for posting this, you may have saved me a messy redecorating job - One question, is there a standard colour code for HDMI cables or will I have to check and prove the pairs myself?
