They didnt invent 'sliding' a car, physics did. What they did invent is the sport and the term of drifting. Its said it started when the drift king won downhill mountain races by sliding some corners to take a different line. He then continued exclusively with it, turning it into a sport. So in a sence, they did invent it. Drifting is very specific. Its not just getting sideways. Its not done in rally's. It is also a much slower way around a corner.
