Take a look at the royal families of Europe along with the military and political leaders whose plans and mistakes would soon engulf Eupore in War. Related to each other by blood and marriage the majority of these dynasties will not be survive the war they will soon bring on.
I love the part about England not being eager for trade competition. So much for "free trade" and the purported economic benefits, such as production efficiency and optimal resource utilization, that economists argue accompany competition!

The world is full of kings and queens, who blind your eyes and steal your dreams....It's heaven and hell! Isn't that the truth?

@eriklessons It's very shocking to see how quickly Europe collapses into a war. I think this TV series gets at several causes, from the intertwined royal families, to the various treaties between nations, to the swift technological and social changes taking place. Above all, I have the impression of a situation spiraling out of control. War as a means of national policy becoming a mechanical monster, a monster that breaks loose. WWI was absolute madness, completely useless. That's my take.

@eriklessons Check out the series The First World War, especially the first episode. I never really felt I understood the causal chain of events either, until I watched this. Excellent documentary, which also shows how WWI is still relevant to us today.
