The way I was thinking of it, X-Y are the ground you walk on, Z is vertical.

Let's leave it at this...Z plane can mean different things in different lingos, but suffice to say they weren't wrong, per se. It's just different.

...improve the story? without the awesome story this game would of been very mediocre. its gameplay was very linear. and i experienced no bugs during my play anyways.
