@coolfungus no it is not posible to remove the gearbox, becouse the gearbox is also the engine slumpan. and hold the engine mounting.
the engine it self is not so big but can not be remove without removing the engine in one piece out of the car.

Question: I've recently purchased my first saab, it's a 1992 900 turbo coupe. The car is in immaculate condition, except for the fact that its missing the fourth gear. Now, I've never work on a saab before, and I've been told that you cannot replace the transmission or gearbox without removing the engine from the car. My question is: is it at all possible to do a job like that without removing the engine?

Never seen a gearbox swap without removing the engine. But have you check the rubber joint between gearbox and shifter? Positioned at the firewall.
