The single stroke roll is one of the most important of the 40 standard drum rudiments. In this video drum lesson, the single stroke roll is being played on the snare drum.

The technique for the single stroke is quite simple. You simply alternate between both hands playing only one stroke in each. This rudiment is sometimes referred to as a drum roll.

The sticking for the single stroke roll is:
RLRLRLRL...

Start out by playing the rudiment very slowly and over emphasizing each stroke. The slower and more even you start playing this rudiment, the faster you will develop a nice even sounding and fast single stroke roll.

  • That isn't even that fast, every single punk drummer can do that.

  • @drummerJxUNIT Thanks for your useless comment. Did anyone ever say it was fast? It is simply a video showing the single stroke roll. Any idiot can play fast after enough practice - and fast doesn't mean you are a good player. In fact the real test of a good drummer is how they sound when playing slow.

  • @freedrumrudiments Couldn't have said it better myself. You find this cult of speed with all instruments now, the fastest drummer, the fastest guitar lick, the fastest bass player etc.

Half the joy of drumming is getting the subtle little nuances just right, the tone, the personality.

No one has tone or personality at 20000bpm.

  • that was all wrist?! thats insane!

  • try not using your wrists as much once you get going faster, instead use your middle finger, ring finger, and pinkie, it builds up muscle and you can go alot faster without struggling

  • @gtx265 go and practise...^^

  • slow ;)

  • I'm not a drummer, but I was impressed

  • Great technique!
