Sameer's Bungee Jump at Kawarau Bridge

My bungee jump at the Kawarau Bridge, Queenstown, New Zealand. The historic Kawarau suspension bridge is the site of world's first commercial bungee jump, set up by Bungee pioneer AJ Hackett.

The jump, at 43m (142ft) in height, is modest when compared to other newer jumps in Queenstown. However for the first attempt at bungee jumping, the Kawarau Bridge jump offers the perfect opportunity of experiencing the thrill and rush of stepping off a ledge with just a latex cord attached to your legs.Moreover, the icy blue waters of the rushing Kawarau river, flanked by jagged rock cliffs is the perfect backdrop for that first jump.

As can be seen in the video, I was tense and apprehensive while standing on the ledge, debating whether I should just step off the ledge or do a swan dive. Finally after gathering enough courage (and upon seeing Nandita standing way down below waiting for me after her own jump), I jumped off the ledge...

The jump itself gets over in a few seconds. But believe me you... those few seconds are full of heady rush as one plummets towards the water... everything else rushing past you in a blur. Then suddenly, you find yourself splashing into the icy cold water of the river and the latex cord gently jerks you up as if in slow motion. As I was bobbing up and down, the only thought in my head was... Damn! I want to do it all over again!! :)

Take my word for it... go ahead and do a bungee jump... you won't regret it one bit!

PS: A bit of trivia... Kawarau river was one of the locations used in LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring. It was the river on which the fellowship traveled as they went past the gigantic Pillars of the King.
