working in Nigeria and Afghanistan, I believe this to be entirely true; native populations believe in the same thing.

Poverty is created and maintained by government aid. This is also happening on the Reservations of American Indians as well. and the Microcosms of our inner cities!

in response to poetryisessence i think the only trouble with your comment is that they Already know HOW to fish.. it's that the fish get taken because it's cheaper for them to fish than for 1st world countries to fish. A lot of the cases here is that they're very skilled people, they jst don't get paid enough for their products, so they can never get out.

I agree. That is a powerful point that most people would not take too kindly too. Our leaders don't want us to know this is how it works because we are taking advantage of them.

@spcsockrman The first world standards of living are not funded by the first world, the 3rd world pays for it.

VERY WELL PUT! I would put it as "cheap mass produced aid..." we give it to them for free and undermine their economy. Then, yes, we milk them for their production, so that a lot of the work they do results in imports, not improving their own economy. I'm glad to see someone else perceive this so closely to how I do!

I think this is a great vid, Although unfortunately poverty can not only be fought on the level empowering individuals. The reason small local businesses fail is because they cannot compete against the flood of cheap mass produced imports. On top of that big corporations milk developing countries for cheap labour, which again keeps people from creating their own wealth and thereby improving the economy of the country.

I know my comment is simplistic but all I keep thinking is ~ back off on GIVING them the fish, instead TEACH them to fish. That way they can care for themselves instead of waiting until the next time you have the time or resources to go fishing.
