The Ryerson Rams men's volleyball team lost to the Queen's Gaels 3-0 (25-18, 30-28, 25-21) in its home opener on Saturday afternoon at Kerr Hall.
Ryerson came out strong to start the game, leading the first set 8-6 at the first technical timeout. The lead was short lived, however Queen's went on an eight-point rally behind the serving of Joren Zeeman (Cambridge, Ont.) to take a 15-9 lead. The rest of the set went back and forth with the Gaels holding on for the seven point win.
An exciting second set went to the 30th point as Queen's and Ryerson went back and forth the entire set. The Gaels had an early 14-9 lead until Ryerson rallied, and even held a 23-21 lead. After that, the two teams shared points until Queen's finally came out on top 30-28.
The third set was dominated by Queen's early, with the Gaels leading 19-12 at one point. The Rams rallied late but it wasn't enough as Queen's held on for the four point victory in the set.
Leading the way for the Rams was second-year left side David Marynowowicz (Hamilton, Ont.) with nine kills and 14 points including three serving aces. Greg McDonald (Thamesville, Ont.) had seven kills for the Rams and Oleh Kovalchuk (Toronto) added five kills.
Jeff Demeza (Calgary) had a match-high 12 kills for Queen's. Niko Rukavina (Mississauga, Ont.) added nine kills and 12 points, while Zeeman finished with six kills and 12 points for the Gaels.
"I think we came ready to play," said Ryerson Head Coach Mirek Porosa. "We fought hard but unfortunately it's a game of momentum and everything seemed to go Queen's way."
The loss drops the Rams to 0-3 on the season while the win improves Queen's record to 3-1. Ryerson plays again on Sunday as they host RMC at Kerr Hall.
