George T. Griffing, MD, Professor of Medicine, Saint Louis University, Saint Louis, Missouri; Editor-in-Chief, Internal Medicine, eMedicine, discusses whether we should believe in fibromyalgia.http://medgenmed.medscape.com/viewarticle/570225
"Whether we should BELIEVE in fibromyalgia"? It's a REAL condition for pete's sake! Nothing in the video suggested otherwise!!!! How dare you even suggest so in your description!! Researchers have thought for many years that the cause may be neurological...but Rheumy's seem to still know the most about the condition, that's why we keep getting referred to them. Neuro's don't know enough about it yet!
I agree that Lyrica helps the pain. I disagree with your opinion "fibro patients should no longer need to be referred to a rheumatologist." I am a patient who suffered from 1999 with undiagnosed fibro. My doctor of rheumatology was the first doctor to diagnose me in 2007. I had seen about 10 doctors who wasted my time and money and allowed me to suffer needlessly! I have received trigger point injections and nerve blocks from my rheumatologist with much improvement!
Yes, fibromyalgia is real! Although the cause and treatment is unknown, I agree that this may be more neurological than previously thought. There is nothing wrong with my legs... yet they ache non-stop everyday like I have the flu. I want my life back. I lost a wonderful job and am housebound.
My pain threshold is much higher than most though. Take ten people and poke them with something sharp. I will barely flinch. This is not because I am tough, but I live with pain non-stop.

@ceveretts it only makes sense that if rheumatologists are more familiar with it, they're a good choice for treatment.
I don't think it's a rheumatolgic disease but a neurological one, considering the nature of the pain.
