One of my favorite things to do is hike in the Santa Monica Mountains. Because nobody likes the idea of getting lost, I always prepare before every trek. But what's the better navigation tool, a Global Positioning System (GPS) or a good old map and compass?
Great job kids!

My GPS has a compass and a map. Also when I use only a map and compass I use a topographic map and a lensatic compass.
Problems with the GPS were because they trusted the GPS to an exact science. The accuracy is only good up to 100 feet in that type of terrain.
Problems with the map and compass are primarily with the map having no contour lines and no specific terrain features.
Both cases would prove better with the proper training, which no one here had.
