As part of a citizenship day, Year 9 Malton School Students learn how the Council operates, including visiting a Council Chamber and seeing how meetings are conducted.
But rather than just learning in theory, the students look at proposals for re-developing parts of Malton through the Malton Town Centre Strategy, and how the Council is involved in these difficult decisions which attract a lot of public scrutiny.
They take part in a role-play about a fictional market town called Maltown which looks to redevelop its cattle market in the centre of town. They play the part of 10 characters with different views on the proposal. These are:
Mr/Mrs Goggins: A traditional shopkeeper.
Lauren Phillips: A young, single mum struggling to find somewhere to live.
Ted Glen: An 84 year old resident close to the site.
Councillor Brown: A representative of the residents who listens to all the views expressed.
Mr/Mrs Angry: Chairperson of a local campaign group against this development.
Farmer Giles: A local sheep farmer who uses the market.
Squire Own-a-lot: Owner of the cattle market.
Mr/Mrs I Build: The proposed developer of the site.
Swampy: An environmental activist against this development.
Miss Bling: shop-keeper of a new boutique store called Wags-bags.
They then vot on whether this fictional cattle market should be re-developed following the debate.
Part 2 of the video reveals the results.
