  • He was friends with Durufle, so I think it's safe to say he had much more authority as to how this piece is to played than you or I.

  • The solo pedal intro is strange. It's the same on his recordings of the work. I can't figure it out either. He was friends with Durufle and many of his contemporaries, so perhaps he had some inside track we don't have! He was such a natural talent though, despite his foibles!

  • Just remember that Virgil Fox turned many folks on to the organ who normally would not have been. Who can you say that about today??? Rest in peace dear Virgil!

  • Actually, Maurice Durufle and Marie Madeline did attend VF's rehearsal and performance at Notre Dame in 1956 or 58 and gave him directions about tempo and interpretation. Durufle suggested cutting out repeated sections of the Toccata he considered redundant. But the Maitre was pleased with Fox's interpretation and told him so. VF always tried to persuade Durufle to write a piece for organ and orchestra. Unfortunately, it never happened.

  • I love this piece and the way Virgil Fox played it. Thanks for posting it.

  • Oh but my apologies I've gone of course, I couldn't possibly imagine something like you has any remote ability to create something with that can bring tears out of ones eyes or even excite the audience. it would be so "strict" that there would be no room for anyone to enjoy it.

  • Not that you have any of your own markings as but I'm sure that the composer would hate to hear his own works played the same way over and over again by EVERYBODY, unless its a dog like you who wrote it in the first place, you'd probably even write that in the preface. Its the same thing as a black and white movie which you would be the lead in.

  • We can't be talking about 'rights' when talking about music, except copyright laws. A performer has 'the right' to play any piece however they feel appropriate. Music shouldn't be strict in anyway, music needs to be able to bend, and all music is on a level that is acceptable BECAUSE IT IS MUSIC. There is no such thing as a 'bad' performance, we can have a *sloppy* performance, but not a bad one. There is NO SUCH THING as bad music. To tell anybody off for enjoying any performance is arrogant.

  • I don't care if he was friends with god almighty. It doesn't give him the right to DISTORT the markings of the composer. Durufle was a kind and humble man and probably thought fox was a flagrant showman. Did you ever hear of political correctness?

  • How is that 'bull'? He WAS friends with Durufle and he DID have more authority as to how this piece should be played than I or Haholol, or yourself. I stated two true facts... what is your problem?
