Reflecting Back

Reflecting Back is a 17" diameter sphere that was painted in 1989. As Deadwood is very close to where Termes lives much of this painting was done on the spot in the Adams House. This house is now owned by the city of Deadwood South Dakota. This is a wonderful spherical painting to show the six point perspective which Termes is known for. The ghost image of Mr. Adams is shown looking in the window and Mary Adams is standing in the dining room. Termes' image shows in the two mirrors. It is as though you are standing in the living room and turning in a circle seeing everything around you as well as above and below you. This piece is owned by the artist Dick Termes.

I can't see it going concave. Knowing it was a wooden ball beforehand did it, I think. It's amazing piece of work. Is it only possible to draw in 6-point perspective if you use non-flat surfaces?

Thanks for the comment. It is a polyethylene sphere rather than wood. There are some ways on the flat to show six point but it works much better or you could say its true home is on the sphere.

Logically the way the painting shows the room, you are on the inside so seeing it concave goes along with the logic of the painting.

It might be the affect of using the left or the right side of the brain.Take a look at "Which way is the woman spinning? " on you tube.

You are seeing the illusion, the Termes Illusion, I am proud to say. The sphere looks like it goes concave.  That is when the lady seems to reverse the direction she moves across.

Partly why I think this illusion happens is that the world we normally live in is on the concave surface around us. I am making you see it on the convex surface. Your mind fights that and makes it go concave. Let me know if you think that is correct.

Hi, I'm an art student and would like to do some of this stuff as well. Can you tell me where you get the blank spheres? What are they made of?

Interesting effect. To see it going concave, you must also imagine that it rotates in the opposite direction. It's like you are looking through a wide-angle lens...

Wow...Mr Termes that is a masterpiece. Love your work. Very impressive. I found it helped a little if I thought of the next thing that would be coming into view as I turned

I can see it, because my dad, Bruce Crosswait owned the house for a few years, and I got married in it. Beautiful work, Dick! What wonderful memories this conjures up.
