Macedonian Movie "Days of Temptation" (original: Денови на искушение) from 1965, directed by Branko Ivanovski Gapo

In 1918, after the end of the Balkan Wars and the First World War, hundreds of Macedonians immigrated to Bulgaria. Among them there were pro-Bulgarian Macedonians who wanted to exploit the emigrants for their own political purposes. A number of decent freedom fighters were eliminated. The victim of one of the assassins in Sofia was Gjorche Petrov. His assassin is a young boy who doesn't even know that he is shooting dead the man who is one of the last real fighters for the freedom of Macedonia. By discovering that he has been unknowingly involved in the pro-Bulgarian organization and has been used for an execution of this vile act, it means the death sentence for the young boy.

The play "Blackness" by Kole Chashule is based on a political murder, the assassination of Djorche Petrov by the pro-Bulgarian "vrhovists" in Sofia, in 1921. The play presents the background of this violent act, and its preparation. The screenplay was adapted by Dimitar Solev and Gane Todorovski and in their work they mostly follow the dramatic structure. The idea of screening the play was put forward after its remarkable theatre success. What the filmmakers had was a fixed situation in which they were supposed to introduce elements of referential structure, which would deeply intrude into the idea of the play. Mere repetition of the old stage expressions was not a satisfactory expectation. The expressions were supposed to be incorporated in a cinematographic substance, in which the process of organization itself would produce new expressive forms. The adaptation of the play was done within these frames. The conceptual situation of "Days of Trial" is an efficient realization in which a great deal of creative experience has been united. It was directed by Branko Gapo who made his debut with this film. In the first place he attempted to widen the dramatic base by means of which he probably intended to obtain more elements that would enable him to reconstruct the time and the events realistically. The film is prevailed by a convulsive atmosphere of the exodus of the Macedonian revolutionaries burdened with doubt about aim of the fight. The atmosphere is also loaded with permanent moral pressure on the members of the revolutionary movement, already discouraged and morally exhausted. The characters were persuasively performed by Petre Prlicko, Ilia Dzuvalekovski, Dimitar Geshovski, Darko Damevski, Kiril Cortoshev, Voja Miric, Radmila Gurichin, Bozhidarka Frajt and Predrag Ceramilac. The black-and white shots in "Days of Trial" made by Kiro Bilbilovski are of high level of quality. The art directory solutions made by Nikola Lazarevski show the effort to surpass the hybrid forms of the stage management. The music composed by Tomislav Zografski owns the complexity and harmony necessary to suit the visual scheme of the film. All the qualities mentioned make "Days of Trial" a film which brings the Macedonian feature film production closer to the relevant genre set of the historical play, sublimating all the previous cinematographic choices in this field.
