Dunno if you noticed this, but there are only 3 different kinds of rice. the 2,500 円 bag is the same as the 5,000 円 bag, it's just twice as big, hence the 5kg and the 10kg.

In what area was this filmed? The only time I ever saw rice vending machines in Japan was out in the boonies.
And the battery vending machines were always old and seemingly broken down.

I'm assuming the 290 pack were a cheaper...crappier brand of battery. That's all I can think of!
